The vehicle was designed to be transported by a Westland Wessex helicopter. This medium transport helicopter was in service with the British Armed Forces for over forty years. The Lightweight was produced from 1968 to 1984 and was used by various armed forces and later also by private owners.<\/p>\n<p>In the early 1960s, the Royal Marines and the British Army were looking for an air transportable vehicle to replace the Austin Champ. The smallest available Land Rover, a Series IIA with a wheelbase of 88 inches, was too heavy for this purpose. Land Rover therefore began developing a lighter version in 1965.<\/p>\n<p>Many body parts were made detachable, and non-essential components were eliminated. For transport by helicopter, the roof with the canvas bars, the upper body sections, the doors, and the windshield, among other items, could be removed. Furthermore, the vehicle was made approximately ten centimeters narrower through modified axles and shorter drive shafts. As a result, it fit on a standard transport pallet.<\/p>\n<p>The name Lightweight is somewhat misleading: when fully assembled, the military vehicle was no lighter than a standard Land Rover 88 due to the extra reinforcements. However, with the detachable body panels removed, the weight did remain below the lifting limit of the time. In practice, the vehicles were primarily transported by cargo plane or train; transport under a helicopter was rare.<\/p>\n<p>The first production models were built on November 11, 1968. Production continued until 1984.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div><div class=\"vc_empty_space\"  style=\"height: 32px\" >\n\t<span class=\"vc_empty_space_inner\">\n\t\t<span class=\"empty_space_image\"  ><\/span>\n\t<\/span>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div      class=\"vc_row wpb_row section vc_row-fluid\" style=' text-align:left;'><div class=\"full_section_inner clearfix\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\">\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<h3>Our Land Rover Lightweight<\/h3>\n<p>The Lightweight was also produced by Santana in Spain, initially for the Spanish army but later for the civilian market as well. Santana even built a 109-inch version with a long wheelbase.<\/p>\n<p>Our vehicle was built in November 1973 as a 24-volt version with a 2.25-liter petrol engine and was delivered to British Leyland Holland. It was among the first Lightweights for the Dutch Armed Forces. This first batch was intended for the Marine Corps, which had an estimated thirty to fifty Lightweights in service. Together with the Series 3 109s that were also delivered, the Marines had approximately one hundred Land Rovers at their disposal.<\/p>\n<p>There is a second similar example known to exist at the Army Museum in Soesterberg. Otherwise, this version is relatively unknown and still closely resembles the British original. The vehicle has Dutch army taillights. The so-called flagpole holders were intended for the antennas of the radio equipment positioned at the rear.<\/p>\n<p>Because the Dutch army later opted for Lightweights with diesel engines, this vehicle was also converted to diesel at some point. Since then, a five-bearing petrol engine has been fitted again, manufactured in the early 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>After its active service with the Marine Corps, the Land Rover spent a large part of its private life in Belgium.
